Electrolytic organo-lead and organo-tin cpd. prodn. - from alkylating or arylation agent in undivided cell with zinc cathode and lead and/or tin anode
Electrolytic organo-lead and organo-tin cpd. prodn. - from alkylating or arylation agent in undivided cell with zinc cathode and lead and/or tin anode
The alkylation and/or arylation agent is electrolised in an undivided cell between a Zn cathode and an anode consisting of Pb and/or Sn or an alloy of Pb and/or Sn. The process is cheap and simple, and gives high yields of prods. which are easily recovered. The method is safe, giving little contamination of the environment. Conversion of the dissolved metal is about 90%. Anodic passivation of Sn does not occur. The prepn. may be continuous. The organo-Pb cpds. are gasoline additives, polymer stabilisers, components of polymerisation catalysts and biocides. Organo-Sn cpds. are catalysts for addn. condensation and polymerisation, hardeners for coatings and paints, ultraviolet stabilisers for polymers, inhibitors for corrosion by sea water, anti-worm agents and antibiotics. In partic. Pb(RCHX)4 and Sn(RCHX)4, where R is an organic gp. and X is I, Br, Cl,CN,SO3H or other electron-attracting gp., are prepd., using RCHX2 as alkylation and/or arylatin agent. In an example, (CH3)4Pb was prepd. by electrolysing CH3I in dimethylformamide contg. NaClO4, with a Pb anode.
