A rotary drying chamber inclined for passing powdered materials countercurrent to a gas stream while being heated by contact with stream pipes passing longitudinally adjacent to the chamber walls is fitted with a rotary or stationary manifold interconnected with the upstream ends of the stem pipes passing through the chamber. Manifold is used for Luisville (RTM) type equipment for drying particulate materials such as powdered or peletted plastics or vegetables based flours. Interconnection of the steam pipes allows those in which condensation is occurring due to temporary contact with the damp feedstock to obtain steam from those pipes temporarily out of contact with the damp material at the same stage of the drier rotation and hence nut subject to a significant cooling load/condensation, at that moment. Arrangement avoids tube damage due to excessive condensation/steam hammer, esp. at the upstream ends of the pipe where the latent heat demands of the feedstock for removing volatile material is greatest. Tube life prior to replacement may be significantly extended.
