In a pilger rolling mill, for reducing a tubular billet 16 supported on a mandrel 15, an abutment is provided for restraining axial movement of the billet in the feed direction in the initial stage of rolling. The abutment has two levers (20) pivotable about axes (6') fixed in the roll stand (10) to locate abutment jaws (21) in the path of the billet (16). The jaws (21) engage the billet (16) to restrain its movement in the feed direction. The jaws (21) are replaceable and the levers (20) are preferably provided with wear strips (22) which engage the roll stand (10) in the working position such that the restraining force is provided by the roll stand.
