METHOD FOR MAINTAINING A CONSTANT GAS TO SOLIDS RATIO IN EFFLUENT FROM A LONG VERTICAL SHAFT BIOREACTOR

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREAn improved method and apparatus is provided formaintaining a constant gas-to-solids ratio in the effluentfrom a long vertical shaft waste treatment bioreactor. Ina vertical bioreactor wherein waste is circulated underair-injected oxidation conditions around a loop comprisingadjacent downcomer and riser chambers connected at theirterminals and operatively connected to a separation apparatus,the improvement comprises withdrawing treated effluent fromthe riser chamber into a cylindrical vessel from whence theeffluent is directed either to the separation chamber orinto the influent stream depending on the total level offluid in the bioreactor. Removal of large air bubbles fromthe effluent is also effected in the cylindrical vessel. Themethod provides improved gas-to-solids ratio in the effluentand improves sludge flotation in the separation apparatus.
