11163ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREA method of reducing sulfur emissions in boilersfired with low-rank coal whereinfinely divided calcium-based additive is mixed with the low-rank fuelbefore the fuel is introduced into the combustion chamber ofthe boiler or the burner thereof. Advantageously the calciumadditive is mixed with the fuel before the milling-dryingthereof. The quantity of finely divided calcium-based additive whichis mixed with the fuel is varied in accordance with thesulfur concentration of the gases at the end of the combustionchamber, e.g. in response to a sulfur dioxide or sulfur trioxidesensor, to minimize the sulfur content of the gases.
