ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREA fire escape device having an elongated flexibleelement terminating in an end anchorable to a building structureand having a length sufficient to reach a lower, safe supportlevel. Detachably mounted on the flexible element forlongitudinal movement therealong is a slide and sling assemblyincluding a clamp arranged for clampingly engaging the flexibleelement in such a manner as to form a loop therein.The clamp includes a plate having a hole therein, theclamp being spaced from a pad which is connected to the plateby a manually operated screw-threaded connection, the flexibleelement being looped around this connection and with twolengths of the flexible element passing through the hole. Bythis arrangement, the rate of descent of a person using thedevice can be controlled not only by tightening and untighteningthe clamp itself, but also by pressure applied to the loose endof the flexible element by the user or by any other personbelow.
