The use of salts of alkanediphosphonic acids of the formula I IMAGE in which R1 is a straight-chain or branched alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, R2 is OH or NH2, and R3, R4, R5 and R6 are nitrogen bases, such as guanidine, aminoguanidine, dicyandiamide, melamine or urea, a is 1, and b, c and d are 0 or 1, as flame-retardant additives for plastics.
