CO formed during the regeneration of a spent FCC catalyst is completely oxidized to CO2 by a stepwise process that comprises: (a) passing to the regenerator dense bed the spent catalyst and a fresh regeneration gas; (b) oxidizing the coke to produce a regenerated catalyst and a partially spent regeneration gas contg. CO and CO2; (C) increasing the coke content of the regenerated catalyst and maintaining this C level to attain a steady state dense bed temp.; (d) oxidizing the coke by charging addnl. regeneration gas in an amt. sufficient to produce a regenerated catalyst and a spent regeneration gas.
