Thebrake piston operates on a curved cam whose other end is set in a gearing on the inside wall of the brake cylinder. The other side of the cam has a fine set of ratchet teeth to locate an intermediate lever at different settings, depending on the output of the axle load monitor. The intermediate lever is linked to the brake operating rod by more linked levers, spring loaded, which act together with the cam and intermediate lever to alter the mechanical advantage of the system over a wide range of ratios. The whole system is compact, despite operating over a wide pressure modulation range with the input and output thrusts nearly in line for improved stability.
