Coal seam winning by shearer with two cutter drums carried at adjustable levels by swivel jibs, using the leading drum to cut the seam at the roof. before starting out on the winning trip, the body of the machine (1) is adjusted to bring the roof drum (5 or 6 as appropriate to the direction of travel) forward in the cutting sense, in relation to the floor drum (5 or 6) which trails and cuts at this level. Pref. it is only the part of the machine which carries the respective leading jib (8 or 9 as appropriate to the direction of travel) which is angled prior to winning. The body, capable of transverse movement, should slew round a vertical axis (16) with locking facilities in all positions, using a portal frame (2) as mounting, above the level of the floor pack (12) cut clear by the respective top cutting drum.
