A transportation and/or storage container for radioactive substances or articles, esp. irradiated nuclear fuel elements, comprises an outer, thick shielding wall and an inert container directly containing the radioactive material and enclosing it on all sides. Between the inner container and the thick outer wall there is a radial space filled with a radiation shielding, thermally conducting material such as graphite. The wall of this inner container has an increased surface area on the side towards this intermediate space. Vessel is used partic. for the transporting and storage of highly radioactive materials such as nuclear fuel elements, where there is a risk of fission products corroding the outer thick wall and consequently a separate inner containment is necessary.
