An insert for a storage vessel for pumpable or liq. radioactive waste, esp. tritium-contg. water, consists of a number of spherical containers arranged in the theoretically densest, hexagonal packing and equipped with a central filler system. Preferably, the filler system comprises a main feed line with branches radiating from it to the spherical containers. The feed lines and/or the spherical containers may be double-walled, esp. with a testing connection to the cavities between the double walls. Used esp. for storing tritium-contg. effluent which previously would have been discharged to public drains but now have to be stored, on account of stringent legal requirements. The storage system is suitable for above-ground or accessible storage over long periods and is highly safe. Relatively large quantities can be stored in a given vol.
