Exhaust gas leaving the engine flows through at least one channel in a casing contg. a heat storage material, which is pref. MgO. The stored heat is subsequently employed to heat parts of the vehicle. The storage material also contains electric resistance heaters provided with a plug and socket connector, so a mains electricity supply can be used to heat the storage material if the latter has lost its heat. The MgO is pref. in a casing with walls consisting of two foils coated with asbestos foam. Between the two foils is a layer of alumina-silica fibres. The walls of the casing provide excellent thermal insulation to prevent rapid loss of heat when the vehicle is stationary; and the mains electricity can be used to preheat the engine coolant and to warm the interior of the vehicle.
