The band grinder comprises an endless grinding band (10) which, at the grinding position, has its rear surface (32) supported by a rotating (16) disc (15) via a cushion (19) resting on (29) circumferentially spaced (28) projections (27). The cushion is formed by a resilient endless belt (19) having a smooth outer surface (31) supporting the inner surface (32) of the grinding band. This belt pref. runs without tension around a further rotary disc and/or the disc driving the band. The distance of this further rotary disc to the support disc (15) may be adjustable. The projections (27) may be provided on the outside of the rigid disc (15) (as shown) or on the inside of the belt (19).
