A forward-driving machine, esp. of the part-cut type, is located in the cutter shield driving device, used for opening up galleries in mines or tunnels. Part of the driving blade assembly (18,19) of the cutter shield (10) is coupled, or can be coupled, to the forward-driving machine (11), to form a forward thrust unit. With an open roof-shaped cutter shield, the lowest driving blade at least, on each side may be coupled to the machine. Coupled blades can be pressed against the walling by means of spreader cylinders (30) or similar, pref with hinged support for these against the machine frame (24). The machine can have its own continuous tracks, or other provision for travel. This preserves reliable tight sealing between the bottom roof shield blades and a transverse conveyor.
