To achieve easier magnetisation of the individual magnets (1,2) each polarity (N,S) is mounted on its own base plate (5,6). The spacing of the individual magnets is twice the finished spacing. One base plate (5) has slots (5a) of dimension slightly larger than a magnet block (2). After mounting and magnetising, the magnets on one base (6) are passed through the slots (5a) in the other plate to give the required alternate north-south assembly at close spacing. To compensate for the thickness of the slotted plate the magnets on the lower plate (6) can be made slightly thicker. Alternatively the lower plate can be provided with pads (6a) to make up the difference.
