Guiding front end of thin hot rolled strip into coiler - where linear motor automatically centres strip before it enters inlet guides on coiler

At the outlet end of a continuous hot rolling mill train, the front end of the strip is centered before it reaches the inlet guides on a coiler. The centering appts. includes at least one linear motor located between two rollers in the inlet roller track leading to the coiler; and the linear motor moves the front end of the strip transversely if the centreline of the strip does not coincide with the centreline of the roller track. The linear motor is not in contact with the strip, and is pref. covered by a wear-resisting plate providing thermal-, magnetic-, and electric-insulation. Nozzles providing a cushion of gas or liq. coolant are pref. located on the inlet side of the linear motor.S With hot rolled strip less than 2.5 mm. thick, difficulties in ensuring that it is properly centered for entering the coiler are overcome.
