The press consists of a frame with a traverse (I) carrying the main cylinder, and joined to a counter-traverse (II) by tie rods. On traverse (II) is a hollow punch carrying an extrusion die. Between traverses (I,II) is a mobile traverse (III) driven by the main cylinder; and also a traverse (IV) carrying the barrel in which the billet to be extruded is placed. On the surface of traverse (IV) facing traverse (II) is a shear frame sepd. from traverse (IV) by a gap with an axial length equal to that of the barrel plug and the billet residue; and a shear knife is moved radially to remove the residue. Used esp. for mfg. hollow extrudates such as tubes. The billet residue can be sheared off without impairing the alignment of the extrusion tools, e.g. a die and a mandrel.
