Gas cell of atomic frequency standard has a continuous internal coating of an (alkali) metal (Na and/or Rb) carbonate. The coating is pref. formed by vacuum evapn. of a thin metal hydroxide film, followed by reaction with (gas contg.) CO2, if necessary at elevated temp. A homogeneous coating can be produced, which reduces or homogenises the cohesive stress of the metal droplets of the metal vapour distributed in the quantum system on all sides and does not destroy the orientation of a stimulated metal atom formed.
