The process is intended for sterilising packaging containers in cardboard, paper, plastics, or their combinations by steam without damaging the containers. The steam used is saturated and at higher than atmospheric pressure, pref. at a temp. between 140 and 160 deg. pref. 150-160 deg.C. This accelerates the sterilisation process as compared with superheated steam at similar temperature so that the deeper layers of the packaging material remain solid in spite of the equally high surface temperature. Sterilisation times range from 7.2 sec. at 141 deg.C to 0.1 sec. at 160 deg.C.
