Photovoltaic solar cell is mounted on a flexible base composed of 1 or more layers of plastics foil and other materials. At least 1 of the plastics foil layers is mechanically reinforced with fibres. Specifically the photovoltaic layer is air-colled on one or the other side by air flowing between this layer and a layer of plastics foil. In particular plastics foils having an integral transparency greater than 40% for radiation in the 5-12 micron range are used. The disadvantage of plastics foils, namely that the electrical bond between the photovoltaic cells can easily become damaged, is overcome by the limitation of the stretch of the plastics foil.
