The heat pump comprises a compressor, an evaporator and a heat-exchanger, together with the necessary control devices to produce hot water for washing from a central-heating boiler with a built-in water heater. This heater acts as a hot-water storage tank for the heat pump. The latter can be of variable output, and preferably on the cold side of the heat-exchanger, being cut in and out or having its speed altered so as to supply the heater only with water at the desired temp.
