The cleaning plug which is forced through a pipeline consists of two spherical members made of a resilient material having a Shore hardness between 50 and 65, joined by a necked region. Each spherical member contains a metal sleeve (18) to carry a connecting ring (20) with a flange (21) round it, supporting a metal sealing ring (22). The distance between the centres of the two spherical members is the same or slightly less than the inside diameter of the pipe. The diameter of these members is approximately between one and five percent of the inside diameter of the pipe. An alternative design uses a one piece dumb-bell shaped plug.
