In the cold pressure butt-welding of wires or strips, a spacer can be inserted into one of the two clamping jaw pairs to prevent it clamping the welded wire or strip so that the wire or strip can be displaced through this clamping jaw pair for shearing off the welding flash by cutting edges on both clamping jaw pairs. The welding flash can be sheared off without having to remove the welded workpiece from the machine or reposition it within the machine.
