Tetrabromobisphenol A-bis(dibromo-propyl)-ether, (I) is prepd. by reacting tetrabromobisphenol A with allyl chloride in the presence of alkali in organic solvents, e.g. alcohols and subsequent allyl gp. bromination. Novelty consists in adding, to the reaction mixt. after bromination, a bisphenol A quantity corresp. to the excess of Br2 used. Pref. wt. ratio bisphenol A added after bromination:excess Br2 is 0.7-1.6:1. (I) is a flame-retardant for plastics. It is stabilised and can be worked into thermoplastics, also at high temps., without discolouration. The reaction medium is free from Br2 and causes no appts. corrosion.
