Bisphenol A glycidyl ether pre-extended with a dimercapto cpd. or a mercapto-carboxylic acid and Bisphenol A is obtd. by reaction of 1 epoxide-equiv. of diglycidyl ether(s) of formula (II) at 100-250 deg.C. in the presence of a quat. ammonium salt (III) with 0.01-0.2 SH-equiv. of a cpd. of formula HS-R-SH (IV) or 0.01-0.2 SH- and COOH-equiv. of a cpd. of formula HS-R1-COOH (V), followed by reaction at 100-250 deg.C. with 0.3-0.95 OH-equiv. of Bisphenol A; total SH, COOH and OH gps. equiv. = 0.45-0.96 per 1 epoxide equiv.; n = 0 or 0.1-5; R, R' = 2-60C aliphatic residue. Also claimed is the above process. (III) is pref. a quat. pyrrolidinium, piperidinium or morpholinium sa R is a 4-20C aliphatic gp., opt. contg. ether O, and pref. (IV) is dithioglycol, 1,6-hexanedithiol, tri-, hexa- or nona-glycoldimercaptan, or poly-THF-dimercaptan with mol. wt. 1000; R' = 2-12C aliphatic gp., and pref. (V) is thioglycolic, 3-mercaptopropionic, 5-mercaptovaleric or 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid; amts. of (IV) or (V) and Bisphenol A are such that the total equiv. ratio is as above, pref. 0.70-0.96 total SH/COOH/OH equivs. to 1 epoxide equiv.. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are useful, with epoxide hardeners or with di- or poly-isocyanates, for the prodn. of moulded prods. or coatings, esp. surface coatings (claimed). Provides pre-extended Bisphenol A diglycidyl ethers with low, stable viscosity, stable epoxide no. and relatively high reactivity.
