The fibres in the material are bonded together at their crossing points by the application of heat to give local fibre welding points. The application of heat is computer controlled, in an intermittent action, delivered at various angles to intersect. The heat can be delivered by electro-magnetic radiation as coherent light beams, or a beam of electrically charged particles such as electrons. The fibres in the material are such that they will melt together with difficulty, or not at all, at their contact points, with added thermoplastic filaments with a low melting point to give the fused bondings. The process allows a fabric to be developed by bonding warps and wefts at their crossing points without weaving them together.
