The LED structure provides high density along a directed axis. A mesa type of construction is used so that light emission takes place through the top dome of the LED. The semiconductor body (1) sits on the mesa pillar (2) and the LED pn junction (3) is in the centre of the construction. A high reflection electrode (4) is located at the base of the mesa pillar (2) and is sandwiched between it and the base substrate (5). The electrode (4) is typically Au:Zn or Ti/Pt/Au. The mesa pillar is angled at between 30 and 70 degrees to the base (5) plane. The top electrode (6) is a frame formation around the centre and has a bonded wire contact (7). An expoxy resin dome (8) provides the top exit pupil.
