The I.C. engine comprises a crank case (4) on which individual cylinders (3) and/or cylinder heads (2) are each secured by (four) tie rods (6) whose lower ends are held in the bearing caps (5) of the crankshaft bearings (9). Each cap holds two pairs of tie rods, each pair serving to secure one of two adjacent cylinders and/or cylinder heads. Each bearing cap may, in addition, be fixed to the crank case by two or more screws (7,8). The tie rods may be nearer the crankshaft journals than the screws. The arrangement allows disassembly of cylinders and/or heads without dropping the bearing caps.
