The eye testing appts. uses test characters represented via an electro-optical viewing system (1) and controlled in accordance with a stored test programme via a central processor (2). An input device (9) is coupled to input controls respectively operated by the patient (7) and by the doctor (8) for response and control interaction with the test programme, with a data print-out (5) providing the results of the performed test. The viewing system (1) can provide a black and white image or a colour image, allowing the appts. to be used to check colour vision. The patient (7) can be seen while performing each test by the doctor (8) via a semi-reflective mirror. The processor (2) has inputs coupled to the programme store (4); the input device (9) and EEG electrodes are attached to the patient's head. The processor controls the viewing system, an image magnitude store and the print-out device (5). The appts. can be used to perform a wide number of vision checks.
