The road gritter for fitting to cars consists of a funnel shaped container (1) which has two square openings (3) in its base, below which are flexible tubes (4) in which are flexible screw shafts (5). These are driven by an electric motor (7). The free end (8) of the flexible tube is held over the vehicle wheels so that when driving in snow or ice, dry sand is dropped on to the wet tyre where some sticks while the remainder falls in front of the wheel, thus cutting down the possibility of skidding.
