The reciprocating compressor is partic. for supplying compressed air, having a cooling system in the cylinder head for the latter. This system comprises a heat-exchanger of the cross-flow type, through which the air or gas is directed in a zigzag pattern. The heat exchanger can have inner and outer annular walls (18,19) coaxial to the cylinder (11) and inside the cylinder head (12), forming an annular chamber between them. The ends of radial cooling pipes (20) in the chamber are sealed in bores in the walls.
