Recovery of (halo)hydrocarbons (I) adsorbed on activated charcoal (II) is effected by heating to a temp. below that at which (I) starts to decompose but above its b.pt., removing the desorbed gaseous (I) and cooling it to a temp. below its b.pt. A hot gas (air) is used for desorption, then cooled to a temp. below the b.pt. (but above the m.pt.) of (I), so that (I) condenses, and is recycled, opt. after reheating. The gas is passed through (II) in countercurrent to the adsorption at a rate of over 10 cm/s. It can be compressed before passing through (I) and expanded before or during cooling. (II) can also be heated by radiant heat and (I) discharged downwards (by forced flow) and cooled. The energy consumption of the process is reduced considerably.
