The method of the invention is for predicting an optimal flow rate of petroleum into a coking drum during a coking cycle using a digital processing unit. It involves establishing a reference level in the coking drum and inputting petroleum into the drum. The presence of coke is also detected at the established reference level. Then the total quantity of petroleum inputted to the coking drum at the established reference level is automatically derived as is a petroleum flow rate for filling the coking drum to a desired capacity at the end of the coking cycle. The process control unit in combination with a conventional double drum coking system optimises the prodn. of coke in each of the drums since the appropriate coking process variables are continuously and automatically monitored and controlled.
