A shaped cutting unit, cantilevered out from a vehicle side on an arm, comprises two joined truncated cones, pref. of different height, with tools distributed on them, for lifting trenches esp. along roads, or for drainage. The tools have a flat-bar-shaped cutting element running along the pivotal axis of the shaped cutting unit and sloping forward at an angle. At the outward facing end the tools lead forward in the direction of machine progress. They are pref. fitted at an interval from the sheathing surface (6) of the cutting unit.
