The invention relates to a process and an apparatus for environment friendly energy generation from the waste products 1) Red mud from the aluminium industry, 2) Iron(II) sulphate from the steel industry and 3) Refuse from industry and households. To render the stated wastes and the refuse suitable for use as commercial energy sources, it is proposed to feed two of the stated products, such as red mud and refuse, in the comminuted state, preferably combined with coal, mixed and compacted, in packet form to a gas and waste coke generator chamber, the gas being passed into a condensation and wash stage (4) in which iron(II) sulphate in liquid form is fed to the gas, preferably in a stoichiometric ratio to the pollutant load, so that a temperature of 90-160 DEG C results, and the outflowing water is fed to a tar oil/water separating container at (8) and the ammonium sulphate solution, which is circulated by means of a pump (10), is circulated until it reaches 30% saturation and is then fed from (11) for artificial fertiliser production or nitrogen production. The residue in the form of coke from the chamber (2) is preferably fed to an inert gas cooling stage (14), and milling in (15) ensures that this product having a high carbon content is fed to a power station or fluidised bed technology stage (16). The condensed and scrubbed gas is cooled in a gas cooler system (12) and then fed, in a purified and dried state, to a gas distribution network (12).
