It is necessary for the filling of bottles and containers to be continuously monitored in the brewing, beverages and food industry. The following systems are predominantly employed for this purpose. 1) Optical systems which operate to determine the filled level by means of the refraction or reflection of visible light or infrared rays. 2) Systems which operate using gamma or X-rays. For various reasons, neither system provides an optimum solution, with the result that measurement of filled level is the weakest link in the filling plant. This problem has been solved according to the invention by using a microwave system in the filling measuring device. Fig. 1 shows the measuring head; the radar system consists of a transmitter (4) and a plurality of receivers (1, 2, 3). The operating principle consists in that a bottle filled with liquid causes a higher attenuation in the transmission link than does an empty bottle. By contrast with other devices for monitoring filled level, the measuring device is smaller, simpler and more reliable, and has a very low power consumption and also none of the disadvantages of the devices which operate using a hard radiation.
