The invention relates to a method for reducing alkali losses from metal halide lamps containing alkali metal halide, wherein a discharge vessel in the lamp is provided with a coating for reducing the alkali losses. The essence of the invention is that the coating is produced on the outer surface of the discharge vessel and on the inner metallic and insulating constituents of the lamp. The method ensures a significant reduction in the alkali losses from metal halide lamps containing sodium halide, but the losses of other alkali metals are also reduced.
