PURPOSE:To remove impurities advantaneously, by absorbing a raw material of the titled compound in water, neutralizing halognated hydrocarbons with calcium compounds, decomposing chlorofluoroacetones with a carbonate of an alkali metal, etc. and removing them, followed by neutralization. CONSTITUTION:Raw hexafluoroacetone is absorbed in water, and halogenated hydrocarbons contained as impurities are neutralized with a calcium compound, e.g., CaO, Ca(OH)2, CaCo3, etc. After chlorofluoroacetones contained as impurities and decomposed with a hydroxide, carbonate and/or oxide of alkali metal or alkaline earth metal, e.g., K2CO3, Na2CO3, Ca(OH)2, Ba(OH)2, Ba(OH)2, etc. and removed, the resulting material is neutralized with a mineral acid, and, if necessary, the prepared hexafluoroacetone hydrate is concentrated and isolated, so give pure hexafluoroacetone useful for preparing a fluorine-containing polymer, etc. completely free from the impurities.
