Dinitroaniline derivs. of formula (I) are new. (where X is halo, haloalkyl or alkylsulphonyl; R is alkyl; R1 is an esterifying residue of an organic acid). (I) are herbicides, some with broad and others with narrows spectrum of activity. A typical cpd., N-acetoxy-N-methyl-2-(4-methyl-2,6-dinitroanilino) propionamide was prepd. in 41% yield by reaction of N-acetyl-N'-methylimidazole with N-hydroxy-N-methyl-2-(4-methyl-2,6-dinitroanilino) propionamide in CH2Cl2 at room temp.
