Continuous casting machine - where cooling water sprayed onto slab is prevented from reaching mould by compressed air streams

On leaving the mould, the cast billet or slab travels downwards through one or more nozzles(8) which spray an auxiliary fluid onto the slab before the latter passes through nozzles(6) spraying a cooling liq. onto the slab. The slab then enters a sec. supporting zone equipped e.g. with guide and support rolls for the cast billet or slab. Nozzles(8) may possess spraying axes located at 90 degrees w.r.t. the axes of nozzles (6). The bottom edge of the mould pref has a concave surface onto which the auxiliary fluid is sprayed, so it flows downwards and prevents the cooling liq. from reaching the bottom edge of the mould. When only nozzles(6) are used, the cooling liq., e.g. water, can reach the mould and cause casting defects or run-outs. The invention uses nozzles(8) to blow compressed air onto the slab so the water cannot reach the mould.
