At least one distributor or screw feeder is used to spread a slag powder over the surface of the molten metal in the mould, and the required thickness of the powder is monitored, e.g. by photoelectric cells, and/or by dosing the powder at a previously established rate. Devices such as a hopper and a screw feeder are used to feed powder through a row of nozzles, and a gas is pref. blown into the nozzles to drive the powder onto the surface of the molten metal. One pref. distributor consists of two rows of powder delivery nozzles, one row being aligned above each long wall of a slab mould, and one hopper contg. two screw feeders, or two hoppers each provided with a screw feeder, drives powder into the nozzles. At no time can ambient air reach the molten metal in the mould and cause oxidn.
