The hydraulically operated bucket (18) excavator (1) comprises a swivel arm (2) with jib (6) carrying a pivoted (8) bucket arm (9) movable by a hydraulic cylinder assembly (16,17). A lever (12) is swivelable about the pivot (8) connecting the end of the jib (6) to the arm (9) at their undersides. Hydraulic power cylinders (17,16) are pivotably connected (15,14) to the other end of the lever (12) and trunnion-mounted to the jib and the arm respectively. The jib and the arm pref. have flat undersides and the forward end (7) of the jib and rearward end (10) of the arm may diverge from the connecting pivot (8).
