An abrasive surface is produced by simultaneous deposition onto the surface of both a chemically derived nickel coating and abrasive particles, the particles being contacted with the surface by means of an agitator, followed by additional hardening by chemical nickel plating in a separate bath. The abrasive particles are pref. contacted with the surface intermittently at regular intervals, esp. by driving the agitator at 200-400 (200-300) c/s for 0.5-4 mins followed by a rest period for 3-15 mins. The method is simple and efficient and gives a uniform surface of high hardness with good abrasion resistance.
