Carbonisation column for NaHCO3 prodn. has a housing with inlet and outlet ports contg. superimposed perforated plates dividing the inside into a sepg. chamber and lower reaction changers, interconnected by overflow pipes, the lower ones having cooling pipes. The perforated plates over the lower reaction chambers have overflow ports distributed evenly over the entire surface of the plates with perforations for the emergence of the gas, so that most of these ports are immediately over but at a distance from the relevant cooling pipes, which cover the straight-through section of these ports. Heat and material exchange are intensified, whilst the recovery of Na from the starting material is increased.
