The thermal energy consumption meter is used in a hot water central heating system to assist in determining costs. The energy is determined from the temperature loss from a quantity of water. A turbine water counter (9) is rotated by the flow of water in an outlet pipe (7) from the energy counter (1). A plastics window enables its rotation to be verified. An opto electric sensor (19) detects the rotational speed of a toothed wheel (18) and the output pulses pass through a divider (20) to an A/D converter (16). The outputs of temperature sensors (13,14) are applied to a differential amplifier (15) for application to the converter. A clock (17) provides the pulses for conversion and application to a totaliser (8) providing a numerical readout of the energy.
