The connector consists of four connection blocks with projections to cut the cable insulation and make contact with the core. These are clamped together by a two part insulating body held together by pairs of lateral screw bolts against their respective conductors. Each half of the body is made from two articulated jaws. Each jaw has a hole in the side at its mid point to house a connecting cable, with a clamping screw. The four cables are separated by an insulating cruciform spacer whose tips fit into spaces between the halves of the connector body and the two articulated halves of each part. The separator is made of two insulating strips with half depth medial notches which interlock. The connector is intended for use on three phase and neutral underground supply cables with stranded conductors and a plastics sleeving with cross sections in the range 50 mm sq to 240 mm sq. The final overall size of the connector is not determined by the size of the largest cable for which it is designed, unlike other types. The articulation provides an independence between each connection which means that all four contacts are made at the same time without the need for adjustments for different cable sizes.
