The safety device for securing in transit a wheelchair to which a safety belt (33) is attached includes an anchorage mechanism to hold the wheelchair down onto the vehicle. The anchorage mechanism comprises two catches (44) of adjustable length attached to the wheelchair which co-operate with two retention members (38) attached to the vehicle at least the width of the wheelchair apart. The catches are pref. tongues mounted on the end of straps (45) and the retention members (38) pref. carry locking buckles (41). Each of the straps (45) is pref. attached to the wheelchair via an automatic winding device (50).
