The wire reel has a frusto-conical central core (2) which is located in between parallel end flanges (3,4) so that the wire (1) can take on a tapering surface on the outside. The reel flanges are removable so as to allow the wire to be removed from the tapered core. The reel may also be made up from a wire core with radial wire ends stops which can swivel out of the way to allow removal of the wound wire. The slope of the core is between 4 and 10%.
