A device generates a signal each time a movable head (1) passes successive points on a straight or curved track (5), the track having a succession of markers (al...k) regularly spaced along the track. The markers are alternate opaque and clear sections (3,4) passing between a light source (7) and detector (8) of the head. The head provides a signal which identifies the passage of each section boundary. A circuit (11) measures the time interval (tk) between successive signals and a circuit divides this interval by a constant factor m, pref. 2. A further divider (16) generates a signal having a period equal to delta tk/m when the head speed provides an interval such that the evaluated positions of the head corresp. to these signals are those of (M-1) points regularly distributed between two adjacent markers.
